Principal Letter - First Quarter
October 17, 2014
Prairie Branch Families,
It is hard to believe that we have completed our first quarter of the 2014-2015 school year! We are off to a wonderful start and the high caliber of teaching and learning here at Prairie Branch continues to be very impressive!
As we move into 2nd quarter, I want to make you aware of a few happenings here at Prairie Branch.
All Pro Dad is a program that is being led by Jarrod Steffens, GVHS Assistant Principal and PB parent. We have had two meetings and many dads have shown interest. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your kids at school through topics such as teamwork, acceptance, communication, etc. Meetings are the first Wednesday of each month from 7:45-8:30AM and breakfast is provided.
First Baptist Church of Blue Springs will begin a second campus here at PB, called the Valley Campus. If you happen to drive by the school on a Sunday morning around 10:00AM and notice a full parking lot, this is what is happening here! Anyone is welcome to attend their services. We are excited about this connection as FBC Blue Springs is partnering with Prairie Branch in a new district program called Bright Futures. This program is an extension of services here at school; a partnership that inspires educational achievement and develops community success. We are looking forward to working with FBC Blue Springs to meet the needs of our students and to give them the brightest future possible!
Lastly, Parent/Teacher Conferences are next week! Prairie Branch teachers are ready to share student progress, concerns, and successes, as well as strategies to help build the partnership between school and home. This is such an important tool for both parents and teachers. Teachers plan to meet with every student’s parent/guardian.
Thank you so much for a wonderful start to the 2014-2015 school year! We look forward to continuing in growth and partnership with you to ensure student success.
Sincerely,
Heather Gross, Principal

Classroom Update
Good morning,
I apologize for not making an update over the course of the also couple of weeks. I was successfully able to meet with all parents! I really appreciate your time and commitment for these meetings. I truly believe your child's education is a dual partnership between home and school and parent communication is vital. Thank you for giving me more insight with your child so I can better meet their needs this year.
Here are the skills we are currently working on in class.
Reader's Workshop
This week we have been focusing on finding the theme in a narrative text. This can be a difficult skill and is one we will work on all year long. Conversations about the books your child is reading at home can help facilitate the development of this skill. Next week, we will begin focusing on the story elements of narrative text.Writer's Workshop
We have published writers in room 114! The kids have all completed final copies of their realistic fiction pieces. We made copies to post in the hallway after they shared with their classmates, but the copies were also sent home. Please be sure to ask your child to share their writing with you! I am so proud of what the accomplished.
We are in the works of developing an understanding of the next genre we will be working on. Students will be writing personal persuasive essays. We will work hard on developing the format of a five paragraph essay and using strong evidence to support our thoughts and opinions. They have already brainstormed some excellent ideas!
Math
In math, we have started our multiplication study for the year. As we visit other skills and refine skills learned in third grade, our strong focus this year will be multiplication. Please help support your child at home by encouraging them to focus on multiplication facts at home. We will start timed tests after returning from winter break in January. Extra focus at home will be very beneficial for the students with their accuracy and fluency.
Science
We have tested over the scientific method and goals will be coming home with the students on Monday. We will continue to work on the scientific method all year through scientific investigations. It is important to have a common vocabulary we can refer to through conversations.
Social Studies
We will begin a new social studies unit next week in preparation for our upcoming field trip to Jefferson City. Students will review the three branches of government, their roles as citizens, as well as features of our state capital.

Classroom News - Week 6
In the Classroom...
Reader's Workshop -This week, readers will focus on reading closely and answering questions using explicit details from the texts. This is a great comprehension monitoring strategy as well as text taking strategy.
Writer's Workshop -
In writing, students are coming close to beginning the revision and editing phases of writing. This week, we will focus on sequencing and ensuring our stories have a clear beginning, middle, and end. We will use transitional words and phrases to help link events.
Math -
We will practice multi-digit addition and subtraction this week. We will learn a couple of different strategies in class that I encourage students to try. It is the Everyday Math philosophy for students to be exposed to multiple problem solving strategies so they can find and embrace one that works the best for them. Please encourage your child to attempt all strategies with the understanding that once they know how to use the strategies, they can choose the method that works best for them.
Science -
We are SCIENTISTS! This week, students will take their first shot at using the scientific inquiry process as they test out their hypotheses. We will use a chopped, peeled, and plain apples to test and see which apple looses the most water over a 5 day period. Students will help set up the experiment, collect data, and draw conclusions over the next week. I know they will be eager to share their results with you at home!

Have a great week!

Classroom News - Week 5
In the Classroom...
Reader's Workshop - This week, readers will continue to make inferences by using text clues and their background knowledge. We will discuss how as readers we determine the meaning of unknown words and phrases.Writer's Workshop - We are on our way in creating realistic fiction stories. This week, we will focus on the details we include within our stories by learning from real authors. Student writers will learn to use sensory details, descriptive details, and similes to make their stories come to life for their readers.
Math - In math, we will focus on place value in large numbers and organizing data to be displayed visually by creating graphs.
Social Studies - We are in the midst of finishing up our science unit. Students are creating either a commercial, travel brochure, or trip itinerary demonstrating their understanding of the different regions of the United States.
Science - This will be a fun week for fourth graders as we dive into SCIENCE! We will first put our skills to the test as we learn about scientific inquiry. Students will go through the scientific method and complete a lab that will last most of our week!

I have been very impressed by their endurance so far and look forward to watching them do their best the rest of this week. Thursday will mark the end of the fourth grade assessment.
Famous Missourians
Mrs. Lewis will send details about the upcoming Famous Missourian presentations later this week. Students will create a live museum on Tuesday, May 13th and Wednesday, May 14th. They have been hard at work conducting research. This is always one of my favorite highlights of our fourth grade year together. I am looking forward to it!

Grandparents' Night... A Great Success!
Monday, March 31, 2014
This week!
In the Classroom
Reader's Workshop - We will soon begin Discovery Groups in Reader's Workshop. Students have selected a time in history to study. As we learn about informational text, students will use their own books and topic to personally explore. My hope is that we will wrap all of our learning up into an electronic project towards the end of the year. I am excited!
Writer's Workshop - The writers now have a very solid understanding of how to write a literary essay. We will continue to explore this genre of writing this quarter and work to really explore the books we have read in fourth grade.
Math - Our next unit will explore reflections and lines of symmetry. This is always a fun unit for the kids!
Science - We are reviewing units of measurement. Ask your child about Gallon Kingdom!
Social Studies - Work is underway for the upcoming Famous Missourian presentations. Dates will be sent out soon as to when the presentations will be held.
Kindergarten Enrollment
This Thursday from 4:30-6 pm will be our kindergarten enrollment for students entering kindergarten next year. You can visit the district's website to fill out the necessary paperwork which will save you time on Thursday night. Please bring with you a copy of your child's immunization record.
Art Fair/Grandparents' Night
Be sure your family is aware of our upcoming Art Fair that is tailored specifically for our grandparents, but parents are of course welcome! Come view you child's art work from 5-7:30 pm. Cookies will be served.
MAP Testing
Just a reminder, we will soon be testing for the Missouri Assessment Program! We will test on April 23, 24, 29, 30, and May 1st between 9:30-12:00.

Classroom News
In the Classroom...
This week will mark the end of our third quarter in fourth grade. We are busy wrapping up learning in a few curricular areas as well as launching into our final units in others. We have a lot of work to do the last couple of months.Reader's Workshop
We will begin wrapping up our learning this quarter before moving on into a new unit. This unit's focus has been fun making connections to visual presentations and dramas. Our Tom Sawyer production provided the perfect connection to this standard.
Writer's Workshop
Our final writing piece for this year will ask for fourth graders to write about what they read. We will be responding to books by asking questions of ourselves as readers and responding as writers. Students will develop opinions and points of view about their text and topics and develop literary essays. This will be a great way to wrap up our learning from reading and writing this year.
Math
We are exploring area and perimeter, but still focusing on developing mastery in basic multiplication and division facts. Any support with this at home would be fantastic and much appreciated!
Science
Scientists are learning about rocks and minerals this week as well as using inquiry skills as we do some experimenting.
Social Studies
The famous Missourian projects are about to begin! This is always a highlight of fourth grade and your child will be sharing some information about this fun-culminating project very soon.
